Murder arrest after man attacked in traffic lights 'altercation' dies
A man has died after the occupants of two cars were involved in an "altercation" at a set of traffic lights, police have said.
Greater Manchester Police said a 30-year-old man died in hospital after being attacked when the cars stopped at lights on the A34, Kingsway, in Manchester at about 01:40 GMT.
An 18-year-old man been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Det Insp Alex Wilkinson said the motive for the attack was "not clear".
A force representative said the man who died and his attacker were "travelling in separate vehicles along Kingsway" before the attack between the Parrs Wood Lane and Queensway junctions.
They said the man was taken to hospital but died from his injuries a short time later.
They said his attacker did not stop at the scene and left "in their vehicle".
"Following an immediate investigation and extensive enquiries, an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning," they added.
Det Insp Wilkinson said an "incident of such seriousness" would cause "shock to the local community and further afield", but an investigation had been launched "to understand what has happened fully and identify all those responsible swiftly".
"Whilst the motive for this murder is not clear at this stage, we do believe the incident to be isolated," he added.
The attack led to the road, a major commuter route into the city, being closed by police to allow an investigation to take place.
As a result, rush hour traffic was severely impacted.
Bus services around the East Didsbury area have been delayed by about 60 minutes, but the tram stop close to the incident remains open.
Det Insp Wilkinson said the road closure would remain in place for several hours and urged road users to show "patience".
"I appreciate the road closures in place are impactful on people's travel, particularly for those going to and from work or school on this route, but would ask the public for their patience and understanding," he said.
Urging anyone with information about the attack to get in touch, he said the force's thoughts were "with the victim's family who have been woken up to such tragic news this morning".
"They are being supported and have asked for privacy whilst they come to terms with what has happened," he added.
