A 15-year-old boy has been stabbed to death in a park in south London.

The teenager was found fatally injured after police were called to Ashburton Park in Croydon shortly after 19:00 GMT on Thursday over reports of an assault.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene. No arrests have been made and a crime scene remains in place.

The death is the 29th killing of a teenager in London in 2021 - the highest number of teenage homicides in the capital since 2008.

Police said the victim's family had been informed but formal identification had not yet taken place.

'Heartbroken families'

A post-mortem examination is due to be held later.

Met Police Commander Alex Murray said: "I am deeply saddened by every single homicide this year, and greatly concerned by those that have been teenage killings.

"Each one is a tragedy leaving behind heartbroken families and distressed communities."

He said the force was not "complacent" about knife crime and was "devoting huge resources" to preventing such incidents.

"Tackling violence is our top priority and we are committed to making London safer," he added.
