RAF Scampton: Two charged after protest arrests at asylum centre site

Two people have been charged with public order offences following a protest outside former RAF Scampton.

Officers were called at about 07:30 BST on Tuesday to reports of people being verbally abusive and threatening towards the public and site staff.

There were also reports access to the site was being blocked, said Lincolnshire Police.

Two men, aged 42 and 47, were charged with using threatening or abusive words or behaviour, the force said.

Both were later released on police bail with conditions not to go within one mile (1.6km) of RAF Scampton, and are due to appear before Lincoln Magistrates' Court in November.

In a move objected to by some residents, as well as West Lindsey District Council, the Home Office plans to house up to 2,000 asylum seekers at the former home of the Red Arrows and wartime Dambusters squadron.

Meanwhile, Lincolnshire Police warned "swift and robust action" would be taken against those who engage in disorder.

A force spokesperson said: "Balancing the rights of people to present differing views alongside the rights of those working or living in a local area to go about their day without disruption can be a challenge, but it's one we are well prepared for. We will continue to engage with all protestors at the site, providing advice on safe and lawful protest."
