Storm Henk: East Midlands flood warnings issued as rain hits region

A series of flood warnings have been issued across the East Midlands with heavy rain predicted to cause further disruption.

The Environment Agency has issued more than 20 flood warnings across Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

They come as Storm Henk batters parts of the country.

Yellow weather warnings for rain and strong wind are in place until 21:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Flooding has been causing disruption in a number of locations across the region, with roads closed and public transport affected.

In Leicestershire, Countesthorpe Road in South Wigston has been closed and flood water is partially blocking Braunstone Lane East in Aylestone.

Leicestershire Police said it had received "a lot of reports" of crashes and broken down vehicles due to standing surface water.

In Nottinghamshire, the A617 has been closed heading towards Kelham from the A46 roundabout.

Newark and Sherwood District Council said it was working "together with multiple local agencies to help with flood preparations" and urged people to avoid "swollen rivers and flood water".

In Nottingham, the city council has closed Queens Drive Park and Ride until further notice due to flooding. The site will also be shut on Wednesday, the authority added.

Flooding has also caused disruption to train services in Derbyshire.

East Midlands Railway said the railway between Derby and Stoke-on-Trent was closed due to flooding.
