Miners' strike: Wife Aggie Currie remembers the 1984 dispute

A miner's wife has remembered the strikes in the 1980s, including when she "egged" government minister Michael Heseltine.

Aggie Currie, whose husband Pete worked at Markham Main Colliery in South Yorkshire, said she was arrested "between 17 and 18 times" at protests and marches.

Mrs Currie said she "had to do something" during the dispute as several members of her family were miners.

She added: "We were women, we had a voice, we were strong and we never give in."

The miners' strike of 1984-85 was a defining moment in the history of British coal mining and the biggest industrial dispute in post-war Britain.

It pitted thousands of miners and their trade union against then prime minister Margaret Thatcher and her Conservative government, which supported plans to shut 20 coal pits.
