Pontefract Market £1m transformation completed in bid to lure shoppers

A £1m makeover of Pontefract Market has been completed as part of a wider revamp of markets around the Wakefield area.

Wakefield Council said it hoped modernising the markets would encourage more people to shop in town centres.

The authority said that the £1.1m Pontefract work was part of £6.5m overall improvements.

Councillor Michael Graham said the revamps aimed to grow the local economy and provide jobs.

He said an independent review had found Pontefract Market could have a sustainable future.

"Markets play a significant role in bringing shoppers back to the town centres and contribute to our aim of growing the local economy and providing employment opportunities to residents," he said.

The market hall has been given new flooring, wiring, lighting, ceilings and shutters.

The roof has been repaired, with redecoration for a "fresh look", Mr Graham said.

Outside the 1860 building, the council said "feature lighting" highlighted the Grade II listed façade.

Local ward councillors also paid for repairs to two traditional red telephone boxes.

Nearby Normanton Market was unveiled in May, and Wakefield Outdoor Market moved to Teall Way in June.

Castleford Market is due for completion in spring, when work on South Elmsall Market will start.
