Yorkshire travel disruption as snow falls

Heavy snowfall across parts of Yorkshire has led to motorists being urged to avoid unnecessary travel.

Police in West Yorkshire said officers responded to "a number of reports of collisions" on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, the A169 between Whitby and Pickering was closed due to snow and officers in North Yorkshire said driving conditions were "treacherous".

The Met Office said up to 4ins (10cm) could fall over the Pennines and the North York Moors during the day.

Writing on Twitter, West Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Unit said: "Please drive to the conditions and avoid unnecessary travel."

Snowfall across Yorkshire also affected public transport in some areas.

First Bus warned of a number of disruptions in South and West Yorkshire, while Stagecoach said the snow had caused delays and diversions to "all services in Sheffield".

In Sheffield, the Blue and Purple Supertram routes in Sheffield were suspended between Halfway/Herdings Park and Sheffield Station for a time, but restarted a short while later.
