Lancashire firefighter begins weightlifting record attempt
A firefighter has begun his attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most weight lifted in a 24-hour period.
Glen Bailey, 42, needs to lift more than 91,369 stone (580,220kg), between 10:00 GMT and the same time on Monday, to beat the current record.
Mr Bailey, from Lancashire, wants to lift 94,484 stone (600,000kg) by doing about nine stone (60kg) each time and aiming for 12,000 reps in total.
He decided to take on the challenge in aid of The Fire Fighters Charity.
"It does great work helping to support firefighters both past and present as well as their families by providing a broad range of health and wellbeing services," the father-of-three said.
Mr Bailey works as an industrial firefighter with Mitie Emergency Response Service and an on-call firefighter with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service at Darwen Fire Station.
He said he knew people who had been given support by the charity, "particularly in my industrial role".
"One guy went through a tough time and he had mental health support, while I know a few in Lancashire who have had rehabilitation following injuries too," he said.
"It's a charity you always want to support, because as firefighters, we never know when we might need help ourselves."
His record attempt is taking place in SAS gym in Leyland in Lancashire.
