Firefighters tackle blaze at Cleethorpes former church

Firefighters tackled a blaze in Cleethorpes overnight after a former church went up in flames.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) said crews were called to the Beaconthorpe Methodist Church site in Grimsby Road at 22:00 BST on Thursday.

Six appliances were in attendance from Humberside and Lincolnshire fire services. Crews remained at the scene until just before 03:00 BST.

It is understood the building was empty when the fire broke out.

HFRS group manager Richard Gibson said the building was "well alight" upon arrival.

He told the BBC: "We attended very quickly, set up appliances and quickly got on top of the fire.

"We are well trained and well-versed in this sort of incident, it wasn't a particular challenge for our crews."

Once extinguished, Mr Gibson said an investigation into the cause of the fire would be launched.

Earlier this year, planning permission was given to convert the church into flats.
