Plans for a so-called "pocket park" near a train station have been approved.

The space in Fratton, Portsmouth, is one of the few green spaces left in the area.

Portsmouth City Council has agreed designs for the park, which includes new lighting, planting and seating, to create a gateway to the train station.South Western Railway (SWR) has pledged £68,750 to fund the project, with construction expected to start next spring.

The park, which will sit between the corner of Fawcett Road and Goldsmith Avenue, is one of 58 projects to receive money from the latest round of the train company's Customer and Communities Improvement Fund (CCIF), which goes towards schemes that have a community benefit across its network.Council leader Steve Pitt said the funding was a "positive step forward".

"Annually, we see thousands of people use this route, so it is essential that we make the area safe for those travelling in the early morning, or late at night," he added.
