Horse dies after Hampshire motorway trailer crash
A horse has died after the trailer carrying it overturned on a motorway.
Emergency services were called to the M27 eastbound, between junction one for Cadnam and junction two for Ower, at about 10:10 BST.
Hampshire fire service said one of two horses in the box managed to escape but the other was trapped inside and later died.
The towing car also ended up on its side but the driver suffered only minor injuries, the service added.
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Crews working with our animal rescue advisor and Hampshire police extricated the trapped horse."
Station manager Tim Harrison added: "We were able to use a fork-lift to get the horse in the trailer back on its feet, but it sadly never recovered."
Previously a witness, Toni Cavallo, said: "One horse has just walked onto [the] horse trailer without any visible distress and has been driven away.
"The other is in a horse sling and heavily sedated."
The crash caused delays of more than an hour for motorists although the road has since fully reopened.
