Sir Rod Stewart's declutter sees painting fetch £17k

Music legend Sir Rod Stewart sold a painting for almost £17,000 as he looked to declutter his mansion.

The British rock and pop singer was selling items from his home in Sheering near Harlow, Essex, during a special auction.

The sale made £50,000 after 40 lots went under the hammer, auctioneers Sworders said.

Sworders director John Black said "it was a pleasure" to host the bidding in Stansted Mountfitchet.

It included a mix of modern, vintage and antique pieces from Sir Rod's family home, of which most had been in storage.

Sir Rod, 78, who was knighted in 2016, is famous for such hits as Maggie May, Sailing and Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?

A 20th Century yachting painting he listed for sale fetched the highest price when it went under the hammer, selling for £16,900.

An early 19th Century giltwood console table with a white marble top and mirrored back took £6,500 from a US bidder and a George II-style carved pine pier table made £4,550.

The auction followed the "great success" of similar salesa held by the singer in 2018 and 2019, Mr Black said.

"Celebrity always brings extra interest and this sale was no exception. It was a pleasure to be selling these items," he added.
