A large number of scrapped vehicles including a caravan and containers have caught fire in Essex.

Fire crews were called to a scrapyard on Canvey Island just after 13:00 GMT.

The blaze in Northwick Road was put out by 14:39 and an investigation into the cause deemed it to be accidental, the fire service said.

Incident commander Russ Freeman said the fire started after the operator had been cutting scrap close to flammable materials.

"This then spread to the rest of the scrap yard, as well as another yard and a static caravan," he said.
