Derby: New Greggs factory planned for Spondon site
High street bakery chain Greggs is planning to open a new manufacturing plant in Derby.
The new operation, at SmartParc SEGRO in Spondon, was confirmed in Greggs' trading update on Tuesday.
The development forms part of its wider plan "to support longer-term growth" at the bakery firm.
Local councillors say the plant, which is expected to be fully operational by early 2027, will create hundreds of jobs.
Buildings are under construction ahead of manufacturing and logistics equipment arriving in 2025 and 2026.
A Greggs spokesperson said: "We're delighted to confirm Greggs has entered into an agreement for lease for a new state-of-the-art frozen production and logistics site at SmartParc SEGRO Derby, in line with the company's longer-term growth plans.
"The purpose-built facility will be the focus of Greggs' increased manufacturing capacity needs whilst also supporting the expansion of the company's logistics network."
Derby City Council's Spondon ward councillors Chris Poulter, Nicola Roulstone and Jonathan Smale welcomed the news.
In a statement released following a meeting with SmartParc SEGRO, they said the site would be used to produce sausage rolls and doughnuts and would "create roughly 500 jobs".
Councillor Baggy Shanker, leader of Derby City Council, said: "We're very excited to welcome Greggs to SmartParc SEGRO Derby. Greggs is such a well-known brand and choosing Derby as the location for the expansion of their operations shows how renowned our city is as a centre for innovation and manufacturing.
"The arrival of another national company to SmartParc is the latest in a long line of positive developments at the site which will bring further good quality, sustainable jobs and increase opportunities for our citizens."
Greggs also plans to buy land near Corby and Kettering to develop a National Distribution Centre for chilled and ambient goods.
The two projects will support plans to increase the number of Greggs shops nationwide by 140 to 160 outlets by the end of the year.
