A level crossing has been closed for emergency repair work following a crash.

Network Rail said a vehicle hit the crossing over the A5132 in Hilton, Derbyshire, on Friday and damaged its gates.

The authority said trains could pass but it had been closed to motorists and pedestrians for safety reasons.

The road is due to reopen next week and Network Rail had advised motorists to plan their journeys accordingly.

Anna Ebblewhite, from Network Rail, said: "Unfortunately, our teams have been left with no option but to temporarily close Hilton level crossing while we carry out emergency repair work following damage caused by a traffic collision.

"The safety of train passengers and crew, as well as motorists and pedestrians, is paramount and this work is vital to be able to return the crossing to a safe operation.

"We want to thank local people for their patience and understanding and want to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
