'Reckless' driver caused fatal crash after taking girlfriend's car
A driver who caused a fatal crash after taking his girlfriend's car has been jailed.
Kyle Buckley had no licence or insurance when the VW Tiguan he was driving collided with Jordan Sheehy's Vauxhall Mokka in Derbyshire in July.
The 26-year-old was thrown from the Mokka and died at the scene.
Buckley, 30, was jailed for three years and eight months after admitting causing death by dangerous driving at Derby Crown Court.
Derbyshire Police said prior to the crash, witnesses described the VW Tiguan being driven by Buckley as straddling the centre line of the road in Ridgeway, looking to overtake another vehicle.
Mr Sheehy, who was travelling behind in the Mokka, was also looking to overtake.
As the Mokka went to overtake Buckley, he moved the Tiguan and collided with the Mokka, which left the road, hit a wall and flipped over.
Mr Sheehy, from the Doncaster area, was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle.
Another man, who was a passenger in the Mokka, was also seriously injured.
Buckley, of John Street, Eckington, fled the scene but was arrested three days later on 4 July.
He was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by careless driving, driving without a licence or insurance, failing to stop after an accident and aggravated vehicle taking.
In addition to his prison sentence, Buckley was also banned from driving for six years and 10 months.
Det Con Diane McDermott, who led the investigation, said: "Kyle Buckley has an appalling record which shows he clearly has no respect for the rules of the road.
"His reckless behaviour on this day led to the death of a young man, and left a family devastated.
"Hopefully his time behind bars will now give him the opportunity to reflect on his behaviour and he will see the error of his ways."
