Flimby flood defence work moves into new phase

Work on a new phase to protect a flood-hit village is about to get under way.

Flimby was among parts of Cumbria badly affected by Storm Desmond in 2015.

Several defences have already been installed since then through a £1.5m grant from the Environment Agency's flood aid scheme.

The A596 road which runs through the village will be accessible during the works, but with temporary traffic lights in place.

Cumberland Council said the flood alleviation initiative had "achieved significant milestones", including diverting peak flows from Penny Gill to Furnace Gill and the construction of additional dams to regulate water flow east of the village.
