An investigation into the cause of a fire which killed a father and daughter in their Cumbrian home is under way.

Paul "Archie" Scott, 58, and 14-year-old Mia Scott died in the blaze at Toll Bar Houses, Distington, just before 05:00 BST on Sunday.

It is thought the fire started on the ground floor but Cumbria Police said it is not being treated as suspicious.

Des Bird, head teacher at Mia's school, Workington Academy, paid tribute to a "kind and caring girl".

He said: "She had the most infectious sense of humour and would always see the good in every situation.

"She was an amazing and loyal friend who will be sadly missed by all of the teachers and students in our school.

"We will be holding assemblies to remember them and to ensure that everyone knows there is specialist support available for both our young people and our staff."

Properties neighbouring the mid-terraced house were evacuated and there were no other reported casualties.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters had faced challenging conditions.

Stuart Hook, from the fire service, told BBC Radio Cumbria: "We may not know exactly the detail of where and how it started until the end of the week.

"At the moment the building isn't deemed safe, the structural engineer has said there are some areas unsafe due to some walls that are freestanding that we may need to do a little bit of demolition work before we can enter.

"We need to go through all the debris slowly to work out the cause and location and seat of the fire."
