Boardmasters surf event back on amid weather warnings

Surfers are back in the water at Boardmasters after the competition was postponed due to forecast bad weather.

On Wednesday, the music festival was cancelled hours before gates were due to open after storm warnings.

"Incoming bad weather" forced organisers to temporarily call off the surfing event at Fistral Beach, Newquay, earlier.

A series of events across the UK have been affected because of expected poor weather.

British champion surfer Peony Knight said Boardmasters competitors were expecting surfing to restart at some stage when a forecast swell rolls in.

Peony, who is through to the last 16 in the Women's Open event, said: "It looks as if we'll be surfing over the weekend as long as the waves are manageable."

Fistral village, which is full of stalls selling merchandise, food and drink and local products, remains closed for the foreseeable, organisers said.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected in Cornwall on Friday and going into Saturday, according to the Met Office.

Boardmasters started as a surfing event in 1981.
