A seven-year-old figure skater who only took up the sport a year and a half ago said she had big plans to be a British champion.

Indigo trains at Cambridge's Ice Arena and beat competitors almost twice her age in a recent competition.

Her coach Lisa Nugent said she was "very talented" and they had "high hopes" for her future in the sport.

Indigo's mother, Angharad, admitted she knew nothing about skating before it became her daughter's "world".

"Somebody of her age, with her desire to be as good as she can be is very, very rare," her coach said.

"Normally it's the parents who are quite pushy with children skating, but it's mainly driven of course by Indigo."

She added: "We've got high hopes for Indigo - she's extremely driven, very talented, hard-working and she's very lucky she's got a great support network."

Her mother said: "From the minute she wakes up to the minute she goes to bed, she's really focused - it's her whole world."

Indigo recently won a spin, spiral and jump competition at Peterborough's Planet Ice, beating off her teenaged rivals for the top spot.

Talking about her coach, Indigo said: "She always believes in me and she always teaches me harder things - and also she always makes things fun."

With championship ambitions firmly in her head, she is thinking even further into the future, and said once she achieves that goal, she would like to "go on to be an ice skating coach".
