Bradley Stoke man charged with assault and fly tipping

A man has been ordered to pay more than £2,600 after fly tipping at a recycling centre and then assaulting staff.

Brett Maloney, 54, of Bradley Stoke, pleaded guilty to six charges at Bristol Magistrates Court on 30 November.

He was also handed 18 months of community service for fly tipping, criminal damage, common assault and two unrelated assaults.

Councillors called Maloney's actions "unsafe" and "totally unacceptable".

On 25 May, Maloney parked his tipper truck outside the Little Stoke Sort It recycling centre entrance, as it could not pass underneath the six-foot height barrier, the court was told.

He then carried waste from his vehicle onto the site, despite signs saying this was not allowed.

When three members of staff tried to intervene, Maloney became physically aggressive towards them and began hurling waste from the rear of his truck onto the road, before leaving.

This prevented any vehicles from coming onto or leaving the site.

Maloney was traced and told the incident had been captured on CCTV footage. He was cautioned and declined to comment.

"This was a shocking case, showing complete disregard for the recycling centre's rules and totally unacceptable aggression towards staff members just trying to do their jobs," said councillor Leigh Ingham."This man's actions were unsafe, intimidating, and prevented other visitors from accessing and leaving the site as well," she continued."I'm very pleased to see this sentence handed to him and hope it deters others from acting this way."

Maloney was also ordered to complete 140 hours of unpaid work and 14 hours of rehabilitation activity.

He also has to pay council and Crown Prosecution Service costs totalling £2,633.
