Trees fall and roads flood as storm sweeps West Midlands

Roads flooded and trees fell as a storm swept the West Midlands as the first heatwave of the year continued.

One fallen tree temporarily closed the J2 exit for Oldbury on the M5 on Monday evening.

It has since reopened but flooding later closed two of three lanes of the M5 northbound between J3 and J2.

An amber warning for thunderstorms, meaning flooding of homes and businesses is likely, was in place until 22:00 BST, the Met Office said.

In Sedgley, near Dudley, part of a tree fell on the road after residents said it had been struck by lightning.

West Midlands Railway warned heavy rain flooding the tracks between Langley Green and Stourbridge Junction meant trains had to run at reduced speed on some lines.

There were forecasts of strong winds, heavy rain and hail in an area from Rugeley, Staffordshire, in the north to Bridgnorth, Shropshire, in the west.
