Charvil sinkhole repairs to start after deal agreed on costs

A large sinkhole that opened up more than two months ago is set to be fixed after funding for the work was agreed.

The 2m (6ft 6ins) crater was discovered in East Park Farm Car Park in Charvil, Berkshire, on 20 November.

Charvil Parish Council said the repairs would cost more than £21,000 and sought legal advice over whether they were its responsibility or that of Wokingham Borough Council.

The authorities have now said they will split the cost of the work equally.

A joint statement said: "Wokingham Borough Council and Charvil Parish Council have been working together to fix the sinkhole and get the car park open again as soon as possible.

"We know having it closed has inconvenienced residents, the school and the local community.

"The borough and parish councils have agreed a way forward that will begin the repair works as soon as possible and will update the community when we know more."

Before the sinkhole appeared families regularly used the car park, as it is located near Charvil Piggot Primary School.

The car park will remain closed until it can be opened safely, either partially or fully.
