A man has suffered serious injuries after a gas explosion caused a house fire.

Crews were sent after the blaze broke out in the detached home in Aldworth Road, Upper Basildon, Berkshire, on Saturday shortly before 22:20 BST.

Thames Valley Police said the man was in a "serious condition" in hospital.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation was under way into the cause of the blast which completely destroyed the home.

The fire service said crews arrived to find the "two-storey property had been involved in a gas explosion".

Crews from nine stations across Berkshire worked overnight to put the fire out and stop it spreading to neighbouring homes.

The blaze is not believed to be suspicious.
