Chiltern Railways trains affected by Stoke Mandeville landslip

Commuters have been warned to expect disruption after heavy rainfall caused a landslip near a railway.

Network Rail warned passengers travelling between Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and London, to expect disruption until Tuesday.

Buses were due to replace trains between Amersham and Aylesbury Vale Parkway stations.

The closure will allow engineers to carry out repairs on the tracks near Stoke Mandeville.

Engineers said they discovered about 5,000 tonnes of material had slipped along the embankment that supported the rails, while investigating a track defect north of Stoke Mandeville station.

Before the track could be reopened to trains, Network Rail said 120 nine-metre-long so-called "soil nails" would be installed into the railway embankment to stabilise the affected area.

Although repair work does not begin until Friday, the affected track was closed from Tuesday and is due to remain closed until work is completed on Monday.

Tony Baxter, operations director at Chiltern Railways, said: "We're sorry that customers between Aylesbury, Amersham and London Marylebone are being affected while Network Rail undertake urgent repairs to the railway."

Network Rail apologised for the disruption and said it would visit residents to warn them about the engineering activity which it expects to cause some noise.
