Rail services and roads hit by flooding

Localised flooding is affecting parts of North Yorkshire

Travellers faced disruption after heavy rain flooded train lines and roads across northern England.

Fifty-seven flood warnings and 68 flood alerts are in place across England, mostly in the North but also in the South West and West Midlands.

Northern said several rail routes had been suspended or amended.

Many roads across the region were flooded, including part of the M66 motorway which was shut when the River Irwell burst its banks near Ramsbottom.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue rescued people trapped in vehicles.

Northern said it "strongly advised" customers not to travel on affected routes and advised people to check details online or at local stations.

The routes affected include:

  • Newcastle - Carlisle
  • Darlington - Bishop Auckland
  • Skipton - Carlisle/Lancaster
  • Todmorden - Manchester Victoria
  • Manchester Victoria - Stalybridge
  • Eccles - Newton-Le-Willows

The Cave Rescue Organisation warned walkers not to follow the Three Peaks Challenge route in the Yorkshire Dales after a part of the route was submerged.
