Former West Midlands Mayor Andy Street says a move to the right will be "political suicide".

Andy Street said "the Conservative brand" held back his own election campaign.

Mr Street lost the mayoral contest in May and says he is ruling out a bid for Parliament.

The current post holder, Adam Tranter, recently announced his intention to stand down from the role.

The former West Midlands mayor is considering his next career move is after his election defeat.

Mr Street says: "I didn't persuade enough people to have confidence in our plans for the future."

The result, which followed a full recount in Coventry, will come as a huge blow to the Conservatives.

The Conservatives also describe as "vile" the comment made in the West Midlands mayoralty race.
