Samir Shah says there's a "sense of almost perpetual government review over the BBC".

The prime minister has ruled out any changes to how the BBC is funded at least until 2027.

The licence fee will rise to £169.50 on 1 April, an increase of 6.6%, after a two-year freeze.

The annual fee will rise by 6.6% - less than the BBC hoped for - based on September's rate of inflation.

Shah, a former BBC journalist, is the government's preferred candidate to replace Richard Sharp.

The culture secretary says an increase of £15 to the fee would add to cost of living pressures.

The long-running show will have an overhaul, but more resources will go into BBC digital journalism.

The former BBC chairman, who resigned in April, says the licence fee system is "regressive".
