Community and Atlanta star Donald Glover says he's retiring his rap and soul alter-ego Childish Gambino.

The actor hinted that he wouldn't be performing onstage any more at last weekend's Governors Ball music festival in New York.

Talking to the crowd at his only show of 2017, he said his next album would be his last.

"I'll see you for the last Gambino album," he said at the end of his performance.

He released his third studio album, Awaken, My Love!, last year which went to number five on the US Billboard 200 album chart.

The record also produced his most successful single to date, Redbone.

But the 33-year-old's told the Huffington Post that he doesn't think it's "necessary" any more.

"There's nothing worse than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we're like, 'Again?'" he said.

"You know, I like it when something's good and when it comes back there's a reason to come back, there's a reason to do that."

As well as recording music for his fourth and final album, Donald is due to appear in the new Han Solo: A Star Wars Story spin-off film as Lando Calrissian.

He's also filming for the second season of Atlanta and Marvel's Deadpool series and will appear in Spider-Man: Homecoming and voices Simba in a remake of The Lion King.

"I feel like there's gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk," he said about retiring Childish Gambino.

"Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn't be punk any more.

"As much as Redbone is a punk song because it's a gospel song that's on the radio, I'm like, there's only so far you can go before you just are the radio."

Donald Glover brought out his first record, Camp, in 2011 with the second one, Because The Internet, following in 2013.
