Army bomb disposal experts were dispatched after magnet fishers caught a suspected hand grenade, police said.
An Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was deployed to Canal Street in Aylestone, Leicester, just after 12:30 GMT on Sunday.
A large cordon was put in place for several hours in the "interests of public and officer safety".
Specialist officers recovered the device, and the cordon was later lifted.
