Man walking dog dies in dual carriageway crash

A man and his dog, who were believed to have been walking on the road, have been hit and killed by a car.

The crash happened on the northbound carriageway of the A1 in Berwick, Northumberland, at about 19:40 GMT on Wednesday, police said.

The dog walker, who was in his 40s, and the cocker spaniel were declared dead when emergency services arrived at the scene.

The driver of a yellow Citroen DS3 remained at the scene and is assisting officers with their inquiries, Northumbria Police said.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
