Driver jailed for driving at 100mph during pursuit

A driver who hit speeds of more than 100mph during a police pursuit before crashing has been jailed.

Andrew Miller, of Greenacres in Wigton, Cumbria, drove "erratically" before losing control of his car and ending up in a ditch in 3 August 2023.

Appearing at Carlisle Crown Court, the 33-year-old admitted dangerous driving.

He was jailed for 10 months and banned from driving for 35 months. He must also pass an extended driving re-test.

The court heard how an officer spotted Miller driving a Volkswagen Golf erratically in the village of Abbeytown.

He then sped out of the village and was seen driving without headlights in an attempt to get away from officers.

He then lost control of the vehicle which rolled over and ended up in a ditch, the court heard.

Det Sgt Deborah Story, of Cumbria Police, said: “Miller’s driving was extremely dangerous and put numerous lives at risk - not just his own and his passenger’s.

“As well as driving far in excess of the speed limits of the roads he was travelling on, his decision to drive without headlights was incredibly reckless – as was his failure to stop at numerous blind junctions.

“Miller is extremely fortunate that his actions did not result in serious injuries to innocent parties.”
