New car parking machines in Runnymede will be cashless

New cashless pay and display machines are set to be installed at car parks in a Surrey borough.

Runnymede Borough Council said it was making the upgrades in early September in response to increasing vandalism, theft, and rising costs associated with handling cash in car parks.

Drivers will be able to use debit and credit card payments, or the RingGo app or phone line to pay for parking.

Runnymede said the introduction of card payments was a "direct response" to requests from residents and visitors.

Work on the first tranche of car parks to have the solar-powered machines installed will take place on 4 and 5 September.

The decision to replace existing machines, some of which are more than 20 years-old, was made by the council's corporate management committee last year.

People without bank cards can use pre-paid cards which can be topped up "via a range of outlets", the council said.
