Fire crews have been called out to a derelict factory in the south of Scotland.

Police Scotland said it had been assisting the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service with the incident at the old Interfloor site on the outskirts of Dumfries at about 13:30.

They asked the public to stay away from the area while it was made safe.

There were no reports of any injuries and anyone who saw anything suspicious has been asked to contact police.

An SFRS statement said it had been called out at 13:38 to reports of a building on fire.

"Operations control mobilised three fire appliances and firefighters extinguished a fire affecting a two-storey derelict building," it said.

"There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe."

Dumfries and Galloway Council is currently seeking someone to work with it on the redevelopment of the long-term eyesore building.

It was recently declared ownerless which allowed the local authority to express an interest in taking it over.

The council stressed it would act as a "facilitator" for others rather than taking on long-term ownership.

That could allow the regeneration of the area where there have been repeated calls to demolish the building on safety grounds and due to its visual impact.
