Burglar stole gecko and sold it for £20
A man who stole a gecko from an animal park before selling it for £20 has been jailed.
Micheal Hesketh broke in to Pets Corner in Chorley's Astley Park on 16 October and snatched Lizzie the gecko, said Lancashire Police.
The 39-year-old Chorley man sold the reptile, which police said was later found "safe and well" before being returned to the charity-run animal park.
Hesketh, of Buckshaw Hall Close, Chorley, admitted burglary and was sentenced at Preston Magistrates' Court to six months in prison.
Police said Hesketh broke in by removing a door handle and "ripping the door open".
Hesketh also caused a "significant amount of damage" while stealing other items, a force spokesperson said.
The burglar cut himself on a piece of glass as he fled, leaving "crucial evidence" which police said led to his downfall.
PC Simon Downes said: “Hesketh didn’t just steal items – he stole a living animal from a place whose aim is to bring joy to residents.
“I am thankful that Lizzie was reunited safe and well and is able to continue to provide special memories to those who come to visit her."
