A subway is due to reopen after being updated, marking the completion of the £6m upgrade of a railway station.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said the subway in Gloucester, due to reopen on Friday, is now "fully accessible" with "modern, better lighting" and new CCTV.

A cable carrying 11,000 volts of back-up power to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital had to be moved as the track beds above the subway were maintained and improved.

The project has also seen upgrades to the Metz Way and Bruton Way junctions, and station parking.

The car park was resurfaced with better drainage, and improved lighting, disabled parking bays, taxi pick-up and cycle racks have also been installed.

Bus services can now operate directly to and from the station, too.

During track bed maintenance, work was done on the cable to the hospital to protect it and ensure supply, which GWR said was "complicated".

In September 2024, the Bruton Way pedestrian crossing reopened, and the first 50 spaces in the car park opened along with disabled parking bays, taxi pick-up and cycle racks, and both Metz Way and Bruton Way junctions reopened.

A rundown subway built out of red brick, with its white brick internal walls covered in graffiti. It has a tiled floor, and someone can be seen walking at the far end of the tunnel.

The rest of the car park, and a pedestrian crossing, reopened a month later after vegetation clearance and the erection of safety fencing.

A new southern car park was opened in October 2024.

The project was funded by a £4.3m investment by GFirst LEP - a local enterprise partnership now handled by Gloucestershire County Council - and a £1.7m investment from GWR and the Government.
