Town's war memorial cleaned and restored

Work to clean and restore a war memorial has been completed, preserving it for future generations.

The Grade II-listed monument in The Square in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, had been showing signs of deterioration and an inscription was "virtually illegible" due to weathering.

The £6,813 project, which started in September, included a steam wash and the installation of a new slate plaque.

The memorial, which pays tribute to those who lost their lives in World War One, was unveiled in 1921.

Phil Knowles, leader of Harborough District Council, said he was "delighted" the work had been completed ahead of Remembrance Day in November.

He previously said the project would "help protect the memorial for future generations".

Jo Asher, the authority's Armed Forces champion, added: "It looks fantastic, and it is so important to preserve these memorials and keep them looking good so we can continue to honour and remember those who lost their lives for us."
