Plans drawn up for £3.3m high street revamp

Plans have been drawn up for a £3.3m transformation of Wednesfield High Street.

City of Wolverhampton Council said the area would have improved paving, lighting, greenery and seating and better pedestrian access and crossings under the plans, which have received government funds.

There will also be improved access to car parks – especially through Bealeys Fold – and the creation of a new events and activity space.

The council said technical plans would be drawn up and a contractor appointed for work expected to start in spring next year, to be completed by March 2026.

Bhupinder Gakhal, cabinet member for resident services, said the scheme would bring the “vibrancy” back to the high street and surrounding areas and boost the local economy.

He said it would “make it a more welcoming place for all”.

Ninder Johal, chair of Wolverhampton’s City Investment Board, said: “As a board we fought hard to secure funding to support improvements in district centres like Wednesfield and Bilston.

"This scheme will make a major difference to Wednesfield High Street and the town centre as a whole, creating a better experience for businesses, residents and visitors."
