Fire engulfs second-floor flat in seaside town

Firefighters have been tackling a fire at a block of flats in Eastbourne overnight.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service was called to the blaze on the second floor of the building in Upperton Road at about 00.20 BST on Sunday.

Two hours later, there were eight fire engines at the scene but fire crews said the blaze was extinguished and the operation would be scaled back.

Sussex Police said at about 03:00 that it was assisting the firefighters and urged people to avoid the area.
