A mum from Cornwall who feared the cost of prom night has launched a new shop selling pre-loved dresses to make the special occasion more affordable.

Second Hand Sundays, based in Torpoint, provides the dresses for teens who will be celebrating leaving school in the summer.

Dresses at the shop start at £20 and all the money made is donated to local causes, said organisers.

Alice Trethewey, who is one of the volunteer directors, said: "I was dreading the whole prospect of having to spend potentially hundreds of pounds for a dress for one night knowing that there were bound to be loads out there."

Summer, 15, said the initiative was a great idea

Ms Trethewey added: "We thought let's ask people to donate them to us and let's try and encourage just one young person to choose a second-hand dress this summer."

About 40 dresses have been donated so far, with two going to 16-year-old Ebby and 15-year-old Summer.

Ebby said: "It's great. It means you don't have to pay the full price for a prom dress."

Summer said: "People who spend loads and loads of money just for one night I think are a bit odd, to be honest.

"This is a great idea where you can just get cheap dresses."
