Cutting edge new esports lab to boost uni's course

Esports students will have access to a lab filled with cutting edge equipment as they learn about "one of the biggest entertainment markets on the planet", those behind the project have said.

The lab, created by the University of Salford’s business school, includes industry standard broadcasting technology, a tournament space and a Formula 1-licensed racing simulator.

The £200,000 facility will fully open in September for those on the university's esports business management course.

Course leader Iain Earle said the lab would be "instrumental" in helping students move into the "rapidly growing" sector.

The lab has been designed to host and broadcast sports competitions with cameras and TV mixing equipment.

A suite for teaching, learning and gaming has also been built for the course, which is about to enter its second year.

Mr Earle, who oversees the programme, said the advanced technology in the lab will help students feel "fully immersed" in a sector which is "now worth billions".

“Turning your esports hobby into a career is now within reach, thanks to courses like this and spaces like our esports Lab", he said.
