Permit parking is being proposed in part of Leicester after complaints on-street spaces were being taken by commuters and businesses.

Leicester City Council has drawn up a scheme to cover more than 20 streets either side of Evington Road and St Peter's Road.

Under the proposal, households will be required to pay £35 a year to be allowed to park in designated streets.

The authority said 1,680 homes and businesses would be affected by the new rules.

Roads affected by the changes would include Cromer Street, Glossop Street, Kingston Road and Osmaston Road.

People affected by the scheme have been given until 2 April to give the council their views on the proposal which it hopes to implement later in the year.

The council said the move was intended to solve the "persistent" problem of commuter and business vehicles using residential streets for free all-day parking.

As part of the proposals, short-term parking bays are proposed for businesses in the area.

The council said this would allow visitors to park for up to an hour.

There will also be 10-minute limited waiting bays created on parts of Evington Road for vehicles stopping to collect takeaway food.

Loading bays will also be provided for local businesses, the council said.

Double yellow lines will also be introduced at junctions within both areas to help tackle congestion and other issues caused by dangerous and inconsiderate parking.
