Refurbished trains for Surrey passengers

Rail passengers in Surrey have benefited from more comfortable carriages after a train operator carried out the first phase of a refit.

South Western Railway has installed new seating, tables and charging points on 17 of its Class 458 trains, with work due to be carried out on another 11.

The trains operate between Weybridge and London Waterloo, as well as through Hounslow and Twickenham.

They were initially intended for use between London and Portsmouth via Guildford, but were switched because of changes in customer travel patterns following the pandemic.

There will be space for two wheelchairs every four cars, with eight cars for each service.

The refurbished trains will operate on the routes as South Western Trains works towards introducing its next fleet of 90 Arterio trains.

The first Arterio completed its inaugural journey in January, four years behind schedule.
