A man has been jailed after a loaded gun and ammunition with his DNA on them were found hidden in a garden, police said.

Kirk Davies, 22, of Middle Way in Croxeth, Liverpool, admitted possession of a prohibited weapon and having ammunition without a certificate.

Merseyside Police said officers had been investigating reports of a stolen motorbike on 23 May when they discovered the loaded pistol and ammunition in a back garden on Westhead Avenue, Kirkby.

At Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday, Davies was jailed for five years.

Det Ch Insp Phil Atkinson said: "I hope the sentencing of Davies serves as a deterrent for anyone who thinks it's acceptable to handle or store firearms in our communities.

"We are relentless in our pursuit of those involved in serious organised crime and we are determined to remove firearms from our streets."
