Council-owned historic hall put on the market

A council-owned former 19th Century country house has been put on the property market.

Derby City Council bought Allestree Hall, which is in Allestree Park, after World War Two.

But the property, as well as 8.7 acres of land, stables and ice house, is now for sale at a guide price of £1.25m.

Chris Keogh, associate director at Salloway Property Consultants, said the property has had a large number of enquiries.

The council acquired the property in 1946 and turned part of the grounds into an 18-hole golf course, which closed back in November 2020.

Since then, the land has returned to nature, becoming the UK's largest urban rewilding project.

Property agents added the hall needed "new owners willing to repurpose and restore the building back to its former glory".

The listing outlines that the "picturesque setting and scale of this property" means there is "great potential" in how the building could be renovated.

It adds "subject to planning and listed building requirements", the building may be adaptable for "educational, office, leisure and recreational or residential use".

Allestree Hall was built in the early 1800s on land previously owned by the Mundy family of Markeaton Hall.
