New hospital technology offers faster procedures

New equipment has been installed at a regional hospital to provide quicker and less invasive procedures.

The team at Peterborough City Hospital's Interventional Radiology (IR) Suite said the new technology would enhance the care provided to patients.

Procedures undertaken at the suite include biopsies; nephrostomies, which aid the draining of kidneys; angioplasties, which unblock narrowed blood vessels, and other urgent operations.

Charlotte Macianskis, interventional section head at the hospital, said: "This new technology is one of the first of its kind to be installed in the UK and is highly praised for its performance in both image quality and low procedural doses."

She said the new equipment would help it meet rising demand.

"Over the past five years our workload has steeply increased by 20% to meet the demands of the service - 723 Interventional procedures were booked in the Interventional Theatre in 2023," said Ms Macianskis.

The equipment should mean procedures require less screening time and it will further assist the radiologist in the most complex cases.
