Ofsted praises school's 'nurturing' environment

A Guernsey primary school has received a positive Ofsted report, which praised its "nurturing and inclusive environment" and "ambitious curriculum".

Castel Primary School achieved a "good" rating, the second highest rating possible, in all five areas of its latest inspection.

Inspectors highlighted the school's "high expectations for pupils' behaviour" along with how it was improving support for students with additional learning needs (ALN).

They credited the school's new leadership for its work to "strengthen" the curriculum and manage change at the school - with changes being "well received" by staff.

The report noted areas the school could improve on.

These included checking consistently students could "fully understand what they have been taught" and that sometimes the provision for students with ALN did not meet their needs.

Pete Curtis, headteacher, said: "To achieve gradings of good in all areas of the inspection is something I am proud of.

"There are things for us to focus on and continue improving, which I have no doubt we will collectively work on in the months ahead."

Deputy Andrea Dudley-Owen, President of the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture congratulated the team at Castel and said external inspections played an "important role" in providing independent validation.
