A Leicester city centre road has re-opened after a decorative stone fell from a church into the carriageway.

Highcross Street was closed between Vaughan Way and Sanvey Gate at about 17:20 BST on Saturday after the stone fell from All Saints Church.

Leicester City Council advised the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) - which owns the building - it would need to carry out a full structural survey before the road could be re-opened.

However, after carrying out a building inspection of its own, the council re-opened Highcross Street on Wednesday.

The CCT said is was thought recent rain and storms could have saturated and weakened the stone, contributing to the fall.

The church has recently been hosting a Vincent Van Gogh experience.
