Police object to city centre bar's late-night bid

Police have objected to an application from a city centre bar to open later and stage live music events.

Tonne Bar in St Martin's Square, Leicester, currently can open until 02:00 GMT each day to serve drinks inside.

But its application to Leicester City Council to extend this to 03:00, to serve drinks outside, and host live music events, has seen Leicestershire Police raise concerns over "alcohol-related" trouble.

Councillors will rule on the amendments to Tonne's licence on Wednesday, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The live music events would "most likely" only be held on "bank holidays and festival days", rather than every week, applicant Nicholas Ameer-Beg said.

Police licensing officer PC Jefferson Pritchard said the application should be refused as it was "vague" and contained "no reference to the venue's security provision".

He also said the "high concentration" of bars in the area serving into the early hours "unfortunately, occasionally [resulted] in alcohol-related violent crime, disorder and anti-social behaviour in the area".

PC Pritchard said if the application was approved, the force would like conditions around the use of CCTV, staff training and logging incidents attached, and for alcohol to stop being served at 02:40.
