Family joins calls for road safety measures after crash
Chris CaulfieldA family has joined calls for road safety measures at a four-way junction in East Molesey after they were involved in an accident.
Rekha Varma and her husband were driving their daughters home from St Lawrence Junior School on 8 March when they were in a crash, she said.
Ms Varma said the other driver "came out of nowhere".
School governor Jim Davidson, who has been campaigning for safer roads for three years, said he had seen "countless" similar incidents.
Rekha VarmaNobody was hurt in the incident, but Ms Varma said the side and rear passenger doors of the car were damaged.
She said, “If my husband hadn’t swerved out the way, it would have been a much worse accident."
Parents are waiting for Surrey County Council (SCC) to decide if the school can have a raised crossing on Church Road near the Vine Road junction.
This would slow cars down and enhance safe routes for pedestrians towards the school, they say.
Ms Varma added: “No matter how safe you think it is, anything that slows down the speed of the cars, especially with the reduced visibility, means it allows safe crossing for the kids.”
An SCC spokesperson said the council was "sorry" to hear about the incident and that "road safety is a priority, which is why we recently carried out a consultation to make the roads here safer".
The council said the results of the consultation are being compiled.
